historically, islam divided 3 major sects known sunni, khawarij , shī‘ah. nowadays, sunnis constitute more 85% of overall muslim population while shi more 12%. today, many of shia sects extinct. major surviving imamah-muslim sects usulism (with more 10%), nizari ismailism (with more 1%), alevism (with more 0.5% less 1%). other existing groups include zaydi shi of yemen population more 0.5% of world s muslim population, musta’li ismaili (with 0.1% taiyabi adherents reside in gujarat state in india , karachi city in pakistan. there significant diaspora populations in europe, north america, far east , east africa), , ibadis kharijites population has diminished level below 0.15%. on other hand, new muslim sects african american muslims, ahmadi muslims (with around 1%), non-denominational muslims, quranist muslims , wahhabis (with around 0.5% of world s total muslim population) later independently developed.
