the name “tuxtla” derived nahuatl , means “place of rabbit.” san andrés refers patron saint, saint andrew.


in 16th century, area belonged santiago tuxtla province. in 1530 there eruption of san martín volcano, prompted movement of people ixtlán city of san andrés tuxtla, called tuzacoalco (land between mountains). settlement recognized in 1580 head of tlacotalpan, tuztla , cotaxtla region.


its tobacco history began in 1830 when slow influx of cubans , europeans made way here , decided climate apt growing of fine tobacco. today, area produces of finest cigars in world. prior mexican revolution industry experienced strikes workers, first occurring @ el destino factory in 1896.


the municipality defined in 1825 , in 1826 city declared seat. in 1830 seat declared town, , in 1893 city.


in 1932, city , municipality’s name changed los tuxtlas, changed san andrés tuxtla in 1938.
