the capitol cinema opened in february 1933, on site of earlier electric cinema, seating 2,100 plans of architects agr mackenzie , clement george. in 1933, capitol luxurious cinema, full stage facilities , comton organ. capitol closed regular film showings in 1960s, used occasional rock concerts until late 1990s; largely moth-balled since 1998, except use of restaurant bar called oscars . b-listed art deco interior extremely preserved @ point. permission granted in 2002–03 conversion nightclubs, saw auditorium split horizontally form 2 large bar-clubs, , rear stage wall cut open create large glass wall , additional entrances. original restaurant out of use. plans restore , return compton pipe organ building have never taken place.
in 2011, aberdeen city council has consulted theatres trust on partial demolition of capitol theatre in order create hotel accommodation associated access , parking. plan, submitted prime properties aberdeen c/o b robb ltd , proposes change of use of bar/nightclub class 7 hotel associated part demolition of existing auditorium , development of hotel accommodation , refurbishment of internal features , associated access , parking conditions set council include approval of:
the conservation methods restoration of art deco interior , exterior of building
specification, location , dimensions dismantling, relocating , reassembling original organ pipe screen, organ niches, compton organ , proscenium arch within proposed conference room
details of restoration , refurbishment of external canopy , entrance doors, new shop front, entrance lobby , stair , first floor tea room recreate original character andappearance of building
also, restored art deco café/tea room shown on drawings shall not used unless open general public, unless planning authority has given written consent variation.
the palace theatre
the palace theatre, located on bridge street, built following destruction fire in 1896 of people’s palace on same site. interior of new palace, 2 tiers, gutted shell walls in 1929 , rebuilt, re-opening cinema 1 balcony in 1931. four-storey asymmetrical granite front survives largely intact, crude design of industrial quality - plain pediment on 3 central bays , 3 large doorways thin broken segmental pediments.
