amroth castle stands on north side of unclassified coast road east of village of amroth. surrounded high wall entrance archway @ south-western corner. present building 19th-century country house built in style of mock castle possibly replaced small stone castle dating 12th century. gatehouse restored. ruinous remains of house grade listed building.
after passing through several hands castle used lunatic asylum in 1850s. converted private house in 1880s later owned , occupied owen colby philipps, shipping magnate bought white star line , created baron kylsant of carmarthen , amroth in 1923. passed daughter nesta, had married george coventry, grandson of 9th earl of coventry. moved out in 1930 when george inherited coventry title , estates.
