in aftermath of local elections first round on november 12, kaczyński s law , justice saw intermediate gains across voivodeship sejmiks , moderate results of powiat , gmina councillor seats. law , justice held provincial voivodeship sejmiks in Łódź, podkarpacie, małopolska, lublin, , podlasie. in major municipalities, party lost majority of councillor seats in warsaw civic platform, suffered setbacks in Łódź, poznań , kraków. party s candidate warsaw mayoralty, former prime minister kazimierz marcinkiewicz, finished next strong showing of civic platform candidate hanna gronkiewicz-waltz. however, in second round of polls held 2 weeks later on november 26, gronkiewicz-waltz defeated marcinkiewicz. defeat in warsaw served blow kaczyński, brother lech served warsaw s mayor until election presidency in 2005.


the government s major opposition party, civic platform, emerged winner during election, increasing share of representation across seats in voivodeship, county , municipal administrations. in election results, civic platform gained majorities in 10 voivodeships (warmia-masuria, pomerania, west pomerania, lubuskie, lower silesia, opole, silesia, wielkopolska, kujawy-pomerania, , masovia).


the elections demonstrated clear defeat left , democrats, upstart coalition between democratic left alliance, social democracy of poland, labour union , democratic party. still suffering fallout of rywin affair , orlengate, democratic left alliance , leftist coalition partners lost majorities in held voivodeship sejmiks , vote decline in local races. however, party elected candidates jacek majchrowski mayor of krakow , tadeusz ferenc mayor of rzeszów, though majchrowski later suspended party membership become independent.


the polish people s party fared during elections. managing increase share of 14 percent of powiat councillor seats , 10 percent gmina seats, party elected partisan organization receive seats in municipal councils.


law , justice s coalition partner, league of polish families, suffered during local elections. government s coalition party mustered 2 percent of vote in voivodeship sejmiks, little more 1 percent in county councils, , half percentage point in gmina councils.


independent politicians or local political activists enjoyed strong results in municipal councils , in city mayoralties.
