career

following graduation in 1856, made register of united states mint 7 may 1857. politically, snowden democrat until 1860 when switched republican party believing democrat s policies detrimental manufacturing interests of country.


after american civil war broke out in 1861, snowden assisted in raising regiment of pennsylvania volunteer infantry , commissioned lieutenant colonel. subsequently elected captain of first city troop of philadelphia.


post-war career

snowden became chief coiner @ philadelphia mint on 1 october 1866, , 1877 1879, served postmaster of philadelphia, snowden served superintendent of philadelphia mint 1879 1885. appointed president ulysses s. grant. in 1878, twice declined serve director of united states mint, offered president hayes. in 1879, became chief executor in philadelphia mint , served in role until grover cleveland s election in 1885. in 1887, served marshal of centennial celebration of united states constitution, held in philadelphia.


he made improvements , inventions relating coining machinery, , wrote articles on subjects relating coinage, great seal of united states, , other subjects. identified railroads, insurance companies, , other business interests.

in 1889, snowden succeeded walker fearn , served simultaneously united states minister greece, romania, , serbia 1889 1892. 1892 1893, served united states minister spain, succeeding edward burd grubb, jr..


later career

snowden president of fairmount park commission. in 1903, accused, along charles a. porter, former state senator, c. kennedy crossan, contractor , ludwig s. filbert, of making illegal profits through danville bessemer company.
