route description (from west east)
part 1: fort william spean bridge
19km, 4.5 – 5.5 hours
ben nevis, fort william
the east highland way (ehw) route begins in fort william engages both west highland way , great glen way. on leaving fort william route follows old ben nevis access track past aluminium works , ben nevis distillery continuing through broadleaf forests on lower northern slopes of carn beag dearg. route crosses deep gorge of allt mhuilinn. torlundy route continues through glen spean via leanachan forest plantation , ascends open hillside past tighnacoille farm. route utilises local walking trails through woods of mointeach dhubh (meaning dark moor), heading east until descending northwards towards spean bridge station. spean bridge has many hotels, b&b’s , shop supplies. commando memorial , highbridge ruin short walk spean bridge , worth visit if time permits.
part 2: spean bridge tulloch
16.5km, 5.5 – 6.5 hours
by spean bridge
the route continues eastwards past killiechonate , corriechoille house, crossing river cour has great pools wild swimming few 100m downstream. on arrival @ insh farm, route follows river spean east monessie gorge when can access accommodation via suspension foot-bridge. route way-marked through inverlair forestry plantation has steep ascent , descent. on arrival @ inverlair lodge continue left bunkhouse style accommodation can found @ tulloch railway station (only short road-walk north, 3.5 km).
part 3: tulloch feagour
34km, 7.5 – 8.5 hours

from accommodation, re-join route @ inverlair lodge , continue along single track road fersit (passing dubh lochan). route way-marked through corrour forestry plantation between fersit , moy bridge. moy, route continues along south shore of loch laggan through ardverikie estate, made famous bbc production monarch of glen. stunning falls of pattack in feagour, accommodation can found via taxi/pickup in laggan.
part 4: feagour laggan village
8.8km, 2.5 – 3 hours
pictish fort, laggan
from falls of pattack carpark, continue follow route eastwards through strathmashie, passing ancient pictish hill-fort of dun da lamh, situated in black woods. wolftrax mountain bike centre can found on-route amenities walkers in cafe. after crossing river spey, laggan village can seen short distance across farmland east. laggan has many hotels , b&b’s.
part 5: laggan newtonmore
15.5km, 5 – 6 hours
laggan village
from laggan, route leads uphill through tiny hamlet of balgowan departs woods more open moorland of strath eilich. after crossing moor towards binnein mor, route picks cluny estate track leads dal-na-seilg bothy in glen banchor. route follows river calder eastwards , descends newtonmore via old glen road. newtonmore has many shops, hotels , bunkhouses.
part 6: newtonmore kincraig
24.5km,6.5 – 7 hours
ruthven barracks, kingussie
from newtonmore route ascends past dramatic allt laraidh waterfall near strone. route continues northwards until meets sharp edge of large forestry plantation north of strone sheep fank. route turns east loch gynack comes view. route descends along gynack burn , arrives @ kingussie has many shops, restaurants , accommodation options. kingussie, route passes ruthven barracks , continues follow waymarked badenoch way kincraig, passing insh marshes , loch insh watersports centre.
part 7: kincraig aviemore
16.5km,4 – 5 hours

from kincraig route passes dramatic frank bruce sculpture park , arrives @ feshiebridge. here - route climbs through inshriach woods past drakes bothy , island castle of loch eilein. area sensitive due presence of capercaillie (a large rare ground nesting bird) , such great care should taken reduce noise, human waste , remain on path @ times. route passes lochan mor , descends road triangle @ inverdruie. finishing point of aviemore short road-walk north-westwards , east highland way connects speyside way.
