1970s Hong Kong Federation of Students
in 1971, senkaku islands dispute arose. administration of senkaku/diaoyutai islands transferred united states japan. on 14 february 1971, hong kong students established hong kong action committee in defence of diaoyutai islands (香港保衛釣魚台行動委員會). action committee held demonstrations in front of japanese consulate in hong kong. twenty-one people arrested, 7 of whom university students. on 17 april, hong kong university students union held peaceful demonstration involving 1000 students. on 7 july, hkfs held demonstration on larger scale. in 1971, hkfs illegal organisation , students arrested royal hong kong police. on 13 may 1975, federation held last protest on issue.
during 1975 , 1976, standing committee of hkfs voiced support cultural revolution in mainland china. committee criticised mak chung man, led students protest against communists , said against chinese . students resented statement , issue became main topic of debate during hkfs elections of 1976.
in april 1977, hong kong university students union suggested removal of words anti-right wing action guide of hkfs standing committee refused vote. delegates hong kong university students union withdrew hkfs in protest.
in april 1979, hkfs commemorated may fourth movement. event poorly attended.
