born in gateshead, started career todds nook, , gateshead ner, 2 local non-league sides first acquired nickname, tadger , affectionately known throughout career.

in may 1902, snapped sheffield wednesday , made 1 appearance in championship winning side of 1902–03. following season more regular selection, making ten appearances wednesday retained title. in 1905–06 wednesday s top scorer total of 22 goals (20 league , 2 cup).
