following breakup of soviet union in 1991, number of conflicts arose in areas of of post-soviet states, new international borders did not match ethnic affiliations of local populations. these conflicts have largely remained frozen , disputed areas under de facto control of entities other countries internationally recognized belonging, , still consider areas part of territory.


since ceasefire ended transnistria war (1990–1992), russian-influenced breakaway republic of transnistria has controlled easternmost strip of territory of moldova. republic internationally unrecognized, , moldova continues claim territory.


the nagorno-karabakh region, ethnically armenian enclave within azerbaijan, has been source of dispute between azeris , armenians many decades. nagorno-karabakh war fought full-scale conflict in 1991–1994. since ceasefire, armenian-backed republic of artsakh has controlled region , area adjoining (giving border armenia). republic remains internationally unrecognized, in spite of efforts settle political status. azerbaijan continues claim whole territory own, , republic in turn lays claim area north remains under azerbaijan s de facto control.


the abkhaz–georgian conflict , georgian–ossetian conflict have led creation of 2 largely unrecognized states within internationally recognized territory of georgia. 1991–92 south ossetia war , war in abkhazia (1992–93), followed russo-georgian war of august 2008, have left russian-backed republic of south ossetia , republic of abkhazia in de facto control of south ossetia , abkhazia regions in north , northwest georgia.


in 2014, crimea occupied russian troops without insignia while ukraine still recovering large scale violence in capital, , afterwards admitted russian federation. regarded annexation of peninsula russia, , considered result in post-soviet frozen conflict. while there similarities between transnistria, abkhazia , 2014–2015 war in donbass, unrecognized donetsk people s republic , lugansk people s republic have taken de facto control of areas in donbass region in eastern ukraine, conflict in donbass not frozen conflict yet ceasefire violations keeping fighting on low burner. however, experts predict frozen future conflict well.
