a dc-10 waterbomber drops retardant on canyon fire


the fire broke out september 17 , grew on 500 acres (2.0 km). due location of fire, burning in remote canyon on southern half of base, access difficult fire crews. on september 18 fire jumped on 2,200 acres (8.9 km) prompting evacuation warnings homes on san miguelito canyon south of lompoc , east of base. mid-afternoon on september 19 fire had grown on 4,528 acres (18.3 km) , no containment continuing burn moderate rate of spread.


as fire continued spread, firefighters faced number of unique challenges. base officials warned there possibly unexploded ordnance left on days when base used during world war ii , korean war. morning of september 20, fire had been estimated @ 10,542 acres (42.7 km) in size 18% of fire contained.


on september 21, ventura county oes water tender assigned fire crashed on highway 246 outside lompoc. crash killed 1 firefighter , sent second hospital minor injuries. individual identified engineer ryan osler.


the fire contained on september 24 after burning 12,742 acres (51.6 km).
