the species first described in 1885 george , elizabeth peckham specimen in guatemala. peckhams subsequently described northern variant separate species, z. bettini, in 1888. in 1980, after examining specimens of z. bettini , z. rufipes various populations, g. b. edwards concluded differences mentioned peckhams not consistently distinct , 2 names represented single species of variable appearance. 2 names therefore synonymized. genus zygoballus classified in subfamily dendryphantinae of family salticidae (jumping spiders).
