new student orientation

morehouse s new student orientation (nso) eight-day experience culminates new students ceremoniously initiated men of morehouse. new students learn legacy of college, traditions, academic divisions, brotherhood, , morehouse mystique. these components complement academic success strategies designed students matriculate morehouse men (graduates). nso led morehouse students, staff , alumni; new students placed on curfew during nso.

regulation of student conduct

in october 2009, morehouse college initiated campus wide attire policy prohibits students wearing women s clothes, jewelry on teeth, pajamas classroom attire, tight fitting caps or bandannas on heads, or pants hang below waist @ official college-sponsored events. dress code part of 5 wells holds morehouse men renaissance men social conscience , global perspective well-read, well-spoken, well-traveled, well-dressed , well-balanced. william bynum, vice president student services quoted cnn saying, talking 5 students living gay lifestyle leading them dress [in] way not expect in morehouse men. these remarks , attire policy have been source of great controversy both on , off campus. president franklin sent out email schools alumni, clarifying university s attire policy not intended affront gays.

morehouse college offers organized , informal co-curricular activities including on 80 student organizations, varsity, club, , intramural sports, , student publications. morehouse ncaa division ii school , competes in numerous sports, including football, baseball, basketball, cross country, , track & field.

morehouse marching band

the morehouse college marching band known halftime performances combine dance , marching music various genres, including rap, traditional marching band music, , pop music. have performed @ super bowl xxviii, today show, @ atlanta falcons home games, , in national commercial morehouse alumnus samuel jackson. gave halftime show during 2013 ncaa men s national championship basketball game. affectionately known house of funk march alongside spelman s maroon mystique color guard (flag spinning) squad , mahogany-n-motion dance team.

2005–2006 morehouse college mock trial team after obtained honorable mention award in first appearance @ american mock trial association national championship tournament in 2006

morehouse s debate team formed in 1906 , has won many accolades since founding. in 2005, morehouse college became member of american mock trial association (amta). school 1 of 4 competing teams come historically black college , all-male team in amta. 2006 2010, morehouse consecutively won regional championship competitions, , received direct trips amta national championship competitions in iowa, florida, , minnesota.

in 2016, morehouse became first hbcu, georgia institution, , men s college chosen host annual u.s. universities debating championship had 200 teams across nation participate.

glee club

founded in 1911, morehouse college glee club has long , impressive history. glee club performed @ martin luther king jr. s funeral, president jimmy carter s inauguration, super bowl xxviii, , 1996 summer olympics in atlanta. glee club s international performances include tours in africa, russia, poland , caribbean. group appeared on soundtrack movie school daze, directed notable morehouse alum (c/o 1979), spike lee. recently, morehouse college glee club invited perform @ abcusa 2011 conference in puerto rico. also, glee club studio-recorded song spike lee s red hook summer entitled zachary , scaly-bark tree.

the maroon tiger

the college s weekly student-run newspaper maroon tiger. founded in 1898 athenaeum, renamed in 1925. american poet , writer thomas dent contributor while attended 1948 1952, martin luther king jr. 2008–2009 staff sought expand newspaper news organization creating morehouse s first television news program, tiger tv, , advancing online news coverage.

miss maroon & white

every spring semester, several spelman college juniors advanced pass preliminary interviews, vie prestigious title of miss maroon & white through formal campaign , pageant process. morehouse students can vote determine winner contestant best represents ideal counterpart morehouse man. miss maroon & white , royal court (two runners-ups known attendants) collectively serve official morehouse ambassadors , represents womanly embodiment of institution year.

the tradition of crowning spelman student miss maroon & white began in 1936 miss juanita maxie ponder winning first crown. miss maroon & white longest active pageant title in atlanta university center.
