thalamus
hypothalamus including neurohypophysis
epithalamus consists of


anterior , posterior paraventricular nuclei
medial , lateral habenular nuclei
stria medullaris thalami
posterior commissure
pineal body


subthalamus

attachments

the optic nerve (cnii) attaches diencephalon. optic nerve sensory (afferent) nerve responsible vision; runs eye through optic canal in skull , attaches diencephalon. retina derived optic cup, part of embryonic diencephalon.
