1980s

along boston, new york city, washington d.c., los angeles , chicago, minneapolis preeminent scene punk rock in early/mid-1980s. venues included longhorn bar, hosted suicide commandos , touring acts, including police on first tour.

goofy s/the upper deck, located above strip club off of hennepin avenue, major spot hardcore , presented popular all-ages shows, duffys, hosted shows black flag, circle jerks, willful neglect, nina hagen , others. goofy s/upper deck closed after riot in 1983 @ show final conflict headlined.

first avenue , 7th street entry hosted all-ages shows young scene established on map local bands including hüsker dü, replacements, final conflict, loud fast rules (later soul asylum), otto s chemical lounge, outcry, skullfuck, idol threat, rifle sport, man sized action , red meat, among others.

the legendary punk zine flesh ron clark , peter davis based in minneapolis, urban decay. zinester saint vitus holds heavy sway era , area.

independent record stores supporting local punk scene include original northern lights records on hennepin ave, treehouse records (formerly oarfolkjokeopus) in south minneapolis , cheapo records in st paul.

the mid-1980s minneapolis hardcore movement included both u.k sound-inspired leather punks , large skate punk contingent, uptown minneapolis heart. both scenes hosted many garage shows local , touring bands. skate punks congregated @ alternative bike shop (the alt) in uptown. uk influenced punks earned nickname mcpunks hanging around uptown mcdonald s bus stop. minneapolis bus system, immortalized replacements song kiss me on bus , artery connecting punks minneapolis southwest high school , st. paul ride 7th street entry , northern lights music.

some of bands late 1980s era final conflict, not california band of same name, skullfuck, willful neglect, misery, iron fist , outcry. final conflict released 1 7 ep in family on local reflex records. reflex run terry katzman, manager of oar folkjokeopus , released records hüsker dü, articles of faith , 2 compilation tapes kitten , barefoot , pregnant . skullfuck recorded demo, no copies survived. willful neglect st. paul released 2 12 eps on neglected records re-issued on cd; wade calhoon & james wallin (of willful neglect) recorded made in shade album due release in november 2014. red meat hardcore band released demo tape, although tracks surfaced on lung cookies compilation lp. outcry released 1 lp , 1 7 ep , influential among straight edge , skate punk crowds.

in 1987 blocked out formed out of minnetonka, mn. singer greg anderson, guitarists chris pierre , keith pichelman, bassist steve erickson , drummer jim alden. influential in suburban punk scene. released ep on tape before breaking in 1991.

decline

in late 80s, along breakup of hüsker dü , replacements, punk scene in minneapolis diminished. during black flag show in 1985, stage diving banned @ first avenue. skank dancing, stage diving, skate punk crew drove mid-80s positive punk scene evolved rap , metal. uk punks faded away , new bands emerged.

as punk scene faded, homegrown midwest rock ethic coalesced become known alt-country. minneapolis became leading alt-country scene led jayhawks, supporting musicians out of old punk scene playing uncle tupelo, son volt, etc. in fact, wilco played first shows @ 7th street entry.

the late 80s saw bands follow hardcore trend towards more expansive , hard rock sound. around time bands cows , halo of flies (babes in toyland) developed sound re-established minneapolis punk originality, blending attitude droning noise , distorted rock. local label amphetamine reptile arose publish new style.

revival

in 1990s 7th st. entry hosted regular hardcore matinees featuring new bands divergent styles.

the band misery provided nucleus became internationally envied crust punk scene in minneapolis. taking influence uk bands such discharge , amebix, misery blended dark , heavy hardcore influential anti-authority political stand that.

the scrods roseville, friends of misery, toured midwest area , released 7 single called voyage hell , humorous, scathing, socio-commentary on poor quality of communications between local metal , hardcore scenes.

blind approach st. paul championed new style of straight edge hardcore popularized new york bands warzone. released 2 7 s , toured usa. guitarist matt henderson went on join agnostic front.

the libido boyz mankato, mn played melodic , poppy hardcore punk , released several 7 s , lp , did extensive touring.

hardcore fractured several subgenres competing political, ideological , artistic viewpoints. profane existence collective formed in 1989 , released records, produced fanzine , booked shows. thd started radio show, house doing basement shows , had record label. sonic warp collective took booking all-ages shows while after first avenue stepped doing all-ages punk shows.

in 1994 group of local punks , hardcore kids (including dan , mandy of profane existence, felix of havoc record , jason of thd, among others) got open extreme noise records, long-running diy co-op punk record store. new store provided center scene. new diy venue opened studio of stars , hosted many shows during summer of 1995.

some former minneapolis hardcore musicians made careers other bands, such todd trainer of rifle sport, in shellac. bob mould of hüsker dü had long solo career. dustin libido boyz in snapcase many years.

in 1999 twin cities skins , punks (tcsp) formally formed , began helping promote local tc bands in diy scene , set all-ages shows. goal, posted on site, make diy hardcore accessible many fans possible while maintaining punk ethic of being against man . - , continues ages diy punk rock scene, defined participatory subculture controlled comprise it: punks... believe packaged tours no ties local punk community utilizing outsider booking agencies without sharing stage local acts ..., thereby fostering local growth, reduce music mere product , represent antithesis of punk. tcsp banned combat these forces, keep influence on scene in hands of people vested interest in music , movement , provide positive , inclusive alternative impersonal herding of club scene.
