in january 1864, enough of officers , men of regiment volunteered re-enlist additional 3 years service unit granted “veteran” status, entitled them thirty-day furlough, , thenceforward referred 46th pennsylvania veteran volunteer infantry. additionally, xi corps , xii corps consolidated 1 , reorganized xx corps, taking xii corps badge insignia. however, still being assigned first division of corps, men of regiment retained red star badges.
the first week of may saw beginning of maj. gen. william tecumseh sherman s atlanta campaign. 46th actively engaged in fighting @ battle of resaca on may 14 , 15, , battle of new hope church on 25th of same month.
throughout june, sherman continued attempt outmaneuver confederate gen. joseph e. johnston s forces. on 22nd, regiment saw stiff fight @ battle of kolb s farm. in battle, men had stacked arms toward rear of position had begun fortify breastworks, when 2 divisions of confederate troops appeared in clearing. after running retrieve rifles , loading them returned line, 46th , rest of brigade, supported artillery, proceeded handily repulse rebels, inflicting terrible casualties, incurring few of own.

in mid-july, sherman practically on doorstep of atlanta, confederate president jefferson davis demonstrated dissatisfaction gen. joseph e. johnston s efforts stop him relieving him of command , placing troops under gen. john bell hood instead. living aggressive , reckless nature, hood wasted little time in ordering attack on union forces near peachtree creek. late in afternoon on july 20, confederates assaulted union maj. gen. george henry thomas army of cumberland, xx corps assigned, catching them off guard. occupying right flank of alpheus williams first division, 46th in danger of being overlapped confederates. companies positioned on right ordered refuse regiment s line, or pull form right angle companies on left. eventually, reinforcements arriving plug gap between williams , next union division right, confederates beaten back. 46th, battle of peachtree creek second cedar mountain in losses sustained: 26 officers , men killed or mortally wounded, 86 wounded, , 1 missing.
following battle of atlanta on july 22, sherman enveloped fortifications around city , settled in siege, lasted until september 2. after occupying atlanta 2 , half months, union forces set out on sherman s march sea, 46th among ranks, on november 15, ending capture of savannah, georgia, on december 22.
