gun rights supporters have criticized proposal. sportsman s alliance of maine s executive director, david trahan, has stated while background checks sound in theory, difficult implement , enforce, why there has been no national universal background check system. criticized potential involvement of michael bloomberg , other out-of-state gun control groups spending large amounts of money in maine. state senator eric brakey criticized effort back-door attempt establish gun registry.


supporters officially launched campaign on may 14, 2016, calling mainers responsible gun ownership. group includes law enforcement officials, gun violence survivors, sportsmen, gun owners , gun violence prevention advocates. state background checks close loophole in existing gun laws allow criminals, domestic abusers, , mentally ill obtain guns without background check not going licensed dealer. claim states expansive background checks experience lower rates of women being shot death intimate partners, lower rates of police officers being killed handguns.
