The 1964 coup d'état and the co-presidency Alfredo Ovando Candía



when paz estenssoro amended constitution in 1964 in order allow himself run re-election (a largely frowned-upon move in largely personalistic world of bolivian politics), general ovando, along vice-president , former head of air force rené barrientos, toppled paz power. ruled in junta (sometimes called co-presidency) until january 1966, when barrientos resigned in order register himself candidate. @ point ovando became sole president, leading country elections popular barrientos emerged victorious. new president having taken oath of office in august 1966, ovando returned post commander of bolivian air forces.
