bilbo baggins, titular protagonist, respectable, reserved hobbit. during adventure, bilbo refers contents of larder @ home , wishes had more food. until finds magic ring, more baggage help. gandalf, itinerant wizard, introduces bilbo company of thirteen dwarves. during journey wizard disappears on side errands dimly hinted at, appear again @ key moments in story. thorin oakenshield, proud, pompous head of company of dwarves , heir destroyed dwarvish kingdom under lonely mountain, makes many mistakes in leadership, relying on gandalf , bilbo him out of trouble, proves himself mighty warrior. smaug dragon long ago pillaged dwarvish kingdom of thorin s grandfather , sleeps upon vast treasure. plot involves host of other characters of varying importance, such twelve other dwarves of company; 2 types of elves: both puckish , more serious warrior types; men; man-eating trolls; boulder-throwing giants; evil cave-dwelling goblins; forest-dwelling giant spiders can speak; immense , heroic eagles speak; evil wolves, or wargs, allied goblins; elrond sage; gollum, strange creature inhabiting underground lake; beorn, man can assume bear form; , bard bowman, grim honourable archer of lake-town.
