coats disease painless. pain may occur if fluid unable drain eye properly, causing internal pressure swell, resulting in painful glaucoma.
presentation
coats affects 1 eye (unilateral) , occurs predominantly in young males 1/100,000, onset of symptoms appearing in first decade of life. peak age of onset between 6–8 years of age, onset can range 5 months 71 years.
coats disease results in gradual loss of vision. blood leaks abnormal vessels of eye, leaving behind cholesterol deposits , damaging retina. coats disease progresses slowly. @ advanced stages, retinal detachment occur. glaucoma, atrophy, , cataracts can develop secondary coats disease. in cases, removal of eye may necessary (enucleation).
