circa 1900, capitol hill known broadway hill after neighborhood s main thoroughfare. origin of neighborhood s current name disputed. james a. moore, real estate developer platted of area, reportedly named in hope washington government move seattle olympia. story states moore named after capitol hill neighborhood of denver, colorado, wife s hometown. according author jacqueline williams, both stories true.


due one-time large roman catholic population, capitol hill referred catholic hill until 1980s.


capitol hill contains of seattle s wealthiest neighborhoods, including millionaire s row along 14th avenue e. south of volunteer park (family residences on tree-lined streets) , harvard-belmont landmark district. has many distinguished apartment houses, including several fred anhalt, few surviving classical revival complexes such blackstone apartments. however, neighborhood s architecture did not fare in decades after world war ii. architect victor steinbrueck wrote in 1962 of tremendous growth of less-than-luxury apartments @ first appear consistent clean, direct approach associated contemporary architecture open outdoor corridors totally defeat large view windows giving occupants no privacy if leave blinds open enjoy view. tenants close blinds , apartment when lease runs out.


since 1997, capitol hill has hosted capitol hill block party annually in late july.


bus transit service , within capitol hill provided king county metro, including electric trolleybus routes 10, 12, 43 , 49 of seattle trolleybus system. first hill streetcar line, opened in january 2016, terminates in neighborhood.

2006 massacre

on march 25, 2006, mass shooting occurred in neighborhood, when 28-year-old kyle aaron huff, native of whitefish, montana, opened fire shotgun , .40-caliber pistol @ rave party after event @ capitol hill arts center. huff killed 6 , wounded 2 others before taking own life after being confronted police. shooting worst mass murder in seattle since 1983, when wah mee massacre resulted in 13 deaths.
