Shortcomings of piece valuation systems Chess piece relative value
there shortcomings of piece valuation system. instance, positions in bishop , knight can exchanged rook , pawn common (see diagram). in position, white should not that, e.g.
1. nxf7? rxf7
2. bxf7+ kxf7
this seems exchange (six points 6 points), not because 2 minor pieces better rook , pawn in middlegame (silman 1998:340–42). pachman notes 2 bishops better rook , pawn (pachman 1971:11).
in openings, 2 minor pieces better rook , pawn , @ least rook , 2 pawns until position simplified (i.e. late middlegame or endgame). minor pieces play earlier rooks , coordinate better, when there many pieces , pawns on board. rooks developed later , blocked pawns until later in game (watson 2006:102).
this situation in position not common, white has exchanged queen , pawn (ten points) 3 minor pieces (nine points). 3 minor pieces better queen because of greater mobility, , pawn not important enough change situation (silman 1998:340–41). 3 minor pieces strong 2 rooks (pachman 1971:11).
two minor pieces plus 2 pawns queen. 2 rooks better queen , pawn (berliner 1999:13–14).
many of systems have two-point difference between rook , minor piece, theorists put difference @ 1½ points, see exchange (chess)#value of exchange.
in open positions, rook plus pair of bishops stronger 2 rooks plus knight (kaufeld & kern 2011:79).
