the airline took delivery of bombardier q400 (n539ds) in march 2006 , on five-year lease. in september 2006, airline announced withdrawing aircraft inter-island service following month, delivery of 2 q400s rescheduled 2007. airline has since returned q400 aircraft , has no plans return these aircraft service.


aviation week & space technology reported on may 19, 2011, airline looking add 1 or 2 additional dash 8 aircraft, , discussing new aircraft options atr, fokker, saab, , superjet international. airline announced in late february 2012 had reached agreement lease 6 atr 72 regional turboprop aircraft, along smaller saab 340 turboprop wet leased penair. airline stated in july 2012 deliveries of atr 42 , atr 72 aircraft begin following month.


after acquiring atr 72 aircraft, island air found them unreliable point airline reviewing potential replacements of september 2013. on march 31, 2014, island air placed firm orders 2 bombardier dash 8 q400 regional turboprop aircraft intention of replacing atr 72 q400.


due record financial losses of more $21 million, on april 29, 2015, island air announced intention cancel delivery of new bombardier dash 8 q400 aircraft in short term airline attempted reposition second largest air carrier in hawaiian islands.


on november 10, 2017, island air announced cease operations after 37 years of service. interisland air carrier operating bombardier q400 turboprop aircraft @ time of shutdown.
