yale s founding in 1895 attributed local farmer, sterling f. underwood, established post office name in general store, 1.5 miles (2.4 km) east of present town. when eastern oklahoma railway built line across payne county, group led george w. canfield began different townsite closer railroad. underwood moved store new site in 1902, making new site permanent location town of yale. 1910, yale had population of 685, supported agricultural services , cotton processing.


on september 23, 1913, oil on randle farm produced gusher. larger gusher began producing month later. more discoveries followed. end of 1914, combined yale , cushing fields producing 220,000 barrels day. town boomed, attaining population of 2,601 census of 1920.


the oil boom deflated. production began decline sharply in 1915, , more dry holes reported. major producers began shut down or reduce operations in 1920s. 1930, population had dropped 1,734. in 1940, census reported population of 1,407. decline continued until reaching low of 1,239 in 1970. there spike 1980, when census recorded 1,652, downward trend resumed through 2010. town officials have tried stem decline promoting yale retirement location.
