history
development , construction

in mid-1970s, oil companies began drilling in canadian part of beaufort sea. in order overcome relatively short operating window of drillships during ice-free season (100 110 days year) , water depth limitations of artificial dredged islands, gulf canada resources began developing arctic drilling system consisting of 2 mobile drilling units: mobile arctic caisson (mac) submerged , filled gravel form artificial drilling island in waters 40 metres (130 ft) in depth , floating conical drilling unit (cdu) designed drilling in water depths between 40 , 60 metres (130 , 200 ft) while afloat. these units, each capable of completing 1 exploration per year, supported 4 arctic class 4 vessels: 2 large icebreakers providing 24-hour ice management , standby services on drilling site , 2 smaller icebreaking vessels responsible anchor handling , supply runs between drilling rigs , coastal bases. 1982, both drilling units , 4 icebreaking vessels under construction in canada , japan beaudril, gulf canada s drilling subsidiary, , company had committed billion-dollar exploration program between 1983 , 1988.

the smaller icebreakers designed canadian naval architecture company robert allan ltd , construction of 1 vessel awarded vancouver shipyards in vancouver, british columbia, in december 1979. keel of vessel laid on 5 july 1982 , launched on 13 march 1983 miscaroo. name, loucheaux owl , had been chosen in naming contest northern territories school children. completed on 29 july 1983 , headed beaufort sea.

miscaroo s sister ship, ikaluk, built @ nippon kōkan k. k. tsurumi shipyard in japan , delivered in april 1983. despite having been built @ 2 different shipyards on opposite sides of world, 2 vessels identical of major components being supplied gulf canada both shipyards. these vessels first canadian arctic vessels powered diesel engines manufactured wärtsilä.

miscaroo , canmar miscaroo (1983–1998)

between 1983 , 1990, beaudril s mobile drilling units drilled total of nineteen exploratory wells in canadian part of beaufort sea support of miscaroo , other icebreaking vessels: 9 mobile arctic caisson molikpaq , ten conical drilling unit kulluk. twelve wells alone drilled in amauligak prospect, significant oil , gas field discovered in region, high expections beaufort sea not met: area characterized large number of small, scattered resources. molikpaq mothballed after completing last in 1990. however, kulluk used drill total of 4 wells in 1992 , 1993 arco alaska on american part of beaufort sea before being cold-stacked @ tuktoyaktuk.

in 1993, beaudril s flotilla of drilling rigs, icebreakers , support vessels purchased canadian marine drilling (canmar). drilling subsidiary of dome petroleum (later amoco canada) had been beaudril s main competitor in beaufort sea more decade , merger of 2 former rivals created world s largest fleet of commercial arctic vessels. despite declining activity in canadian arctic, amoco saw canmar , expertise long-term asset , tried find work miscaroo (canmar miscaroo since 1995), other areas such north sea.

smit sakhalin (1998–2017)

in end, amoco not make profit maintaining canmar , sold company s remaining assets, including canmar miscaroo, cyprus-based consortium of shipping companies in 1997. after having been reflagged bahamas , renamed iscaroo brief period of time, vessel purchased dutch company smit international in 1998 , renamed smit sakhalin. vessel left rotterdam in april 1998 , arrived in singapore management taken on smit s local subsidiary. @ same time, company purchased miscaroo s sister ship, ikaluk, , renamed smit sibu.

the 2 former canadian offshore icebreakers deployed @ vityaz production complex during first phase of sakhalin-2 project in seasonally frozen sea of okhotsk. in addition providing year-round supply services piltun-astokhskoye-a platform (the former molikpaq), served ice management , standby vessels floating storage , offloading (fso) vessel okha , single anchor leg mooring (salm) buoy. icebreakers used assist raising , lowering of salm buoy , beginning , end of production season, , support loading operations other icebreaking vessels until ice conditions became severe. in 2006, management of smit sakhalin transferred femco management , converted dedicated stand-by vessel @ keppel tuas shipyard in singapore. continued in role after ice management operations @ vityaz production complex ended when production platform connected subsea pipeline in 2008. management returned smit in 2013.

in 2011, smit sakhalin participated in search , rescue operation following sinking of jack-up rig kolskaya.
