breda 1 of strongest cities in defence of republic between states of holland , royal brabant. city strategically located on navigable river, mark, , near several roads.
henry iii of nassau, lord of breda 1509 1538, had been commissioned charles v travel through europe. in italy, came contact modern defences. thus, in 1531 inspired construction of late medieval style walls of breda. these later replaced modern fortifications. in 1587 , 1622, defences further expanded , updated.
