during fall of troy, helen s role ambiguous. in virgil s aeneid, deiphobus gives account of helen s treacherous stance: when trojan horse admitted city, feigned bacchic rites, leading chorus of trojan women, and, holding torch among them, signaled greeks city s central tower. in odyssey, however, homer narrates different story: helen circled horse 3 times, , imitated voices of greek women left behind @ home—she tortured men inside (including odysseus , menelaus) memory of loved ones, , brought them brink of destruction.

after death of hector , paris, helen became paramour of younger brother, deiphobus; when sack of troy began, hid new husband s sword, , left him mercy of menelaus , odysseus. in aeneid, aeneas meets mutilated deiphobus in hades; wounds serve testimony ignominious end, abetted helen s final act of treachery.

however, helen s portraits in troy seem contradict each other. 1 side, read treacherous helen simulated bacchic rites , rejoiced on carnage of trojans. on other hand, there helen, lonely , helpless; desperate find sanctuary, while troy on fire. stesichorus narrates both greeks , trojans gathered stone death. when menelaus found her, raised sword kill her. had demanded should slay unfaithful wife; but, when ready so, dropped robe shoulders, , sight of beauty caused him let sword drop hand. electra wails:
