he born on 25 december, christmas day, 1822, son of thomas nelson bookseller, , wife, margaret black. educated @ high school in edinburgh.
thomas joined father s company on 17th birthday in 1839. in 1844 firm moved larger premises in hope park in edinburgh s south side. company began specialising in school text books. thomas junior moved london in 1844 open new major branch there. returned edinburgh in 1846.
from 1855 lived father in newly commissioned abden house in edinburgh s south side, inheriting house on father s death in 1861.
in 1866 elected fellow of royal society of edinburgh. proposer alexander keith johnston.
in 1869 thomas commissioned john lessels build st leonards, large baronial mansion close premises, built in grounds of abden house. building forms part of edinburgh university s pollock halls of residence.
he fell ill-health in 1890 , died on 20 october 1892 leaving fortune of on £1 million.
he buried in grange cemetery, close parents, in extreme north-west corner of original cemetery.
