History Provincial city (Taiwan)



the first administrative divisions entitled city established in 1920s when taiwan under japanese rule. @ time cities under jurisdiction of prefectures. after world war ii, 9 (9) out of eleven (11) prefectural cities established japanese government reform provincial cities. roman spellings changed reflect official language shift japanese mandarin chinese, characters remain same.



the reform based on laws on city formation (市組織法) of republic of china. law passed in 20th century. criteria being provincial city included being provincial capital having population of on 200,000, or on 100,000 if city had particular significance in politics, economics, , culture. division reform in 1945 had compromises between japanese , chinese systems, of cities population under criteria still established provincial cities.







after government of republic of china relocated taipei, taiwan in 1949, population criterion provincial cities raised 500,000 in scheme on local rules in various counties , cities of taiwan province (臺灣省各縣市實施地方自治綱要), passed in 1981. later raised again 600,000.



currently, local government act of ministry of interior applies creation of provincial city, in city needs have population between 500,000 , 1,250,000 , occupies major political, economical , cultural roles. note 3 existing provincial cities not qualified population test, built historical reasons.
