biography
early life
roller born in newman, illinois,. grew on family s farm. boy on farm, roller dreamed of becoming doctor. mother encouraged him attend college, while father felt every man should make own way, picking education experience.
he attended college @ de pauw university, after mother, former school teacher, helped him prepare entrance examination. due family s lack of money, ben worked @ dry goods store, pulling nails 15 cents hour. used money buy new clothes attending school. upon arriving @ de pauw, roller started gym class, began athletic career in football , wrestling. runt in family of six, @ 6 0 , 200 pounds. became captain of school s football , track teams.

upon graduation de pauw, roller attended university of pennsylvania. lack of money college, began play football @ professional ranks.
professional football career
he played pro football pittsburgh athletic club, duquesne country , athletic club, philadelphia athletic club , later player-coach philadelphia phillies of first national football league. in december 1902, played new york team during world series of football. in 1903, played franklin athletic club , won return trip world series of football team. began 1903 season syracuse athletic club.
he played on several of penn college teams , won university championship in second , fourth years, never played varsity because of four-year rule.
post-college
after graduating penn, roller assisted dr. barton cooke, professor @ medical school, in writing textbook. decided accept position professor of physiology @ university of washington. served supervisor school s athletics , advisor seattle athletic club. after 2 years school, decided open office. worked land speculator , acquired wealth until panic of 1907.
wrestling career
he later resigned position in 1906 become full-time wrestler. roller’s first professional match against jack carkeek. roller won 2 falls in period of 17 minutes , received $1,600. after that, started having matches around northwest, under names dr. roller, dr. benjamin roller, dr. b.f. roller, , doc roller. next wrestled frank gotch in exhibition match, received $4,000. after bout gotch, roller decided use wrestling tool traveling world , studying under noted professors in both united states , europe. on span of career, roller defeated many of top wrestlers of day. these wrestlers included farmer burns, fred beell, ed lewis, , joe stecher, managed gotch. 1906–1918, roller posted record of 39 wins, 26 losses, , 4 draws in 69 matches.
