staging through hsinching base @ chakulia, india, on june 15 group participated in first american air force attack on japanese home islands since doolittle raid in 1942. operating bases in india, , @ times staging through fields in china, group struck such targets transportation centers, naval installations, iron works, , aircraft plants in burma, thailand, china, japan, indonesia, , formosa, receiving distinguished unit citation bombing iron , steel works @ yawata, japan, on august 20, 1944.


effective 6 april 1944, hsinching airfield forward headquarters of xx bomber command while rear echelon remained @ kharagpur airfield in india. when b-29 bombers moved india in february 1945 newly captured bases in mariana islands, b-29 use of hsinching airfield ended.


the tenth air force 24th combat mapping squadron established detachment @ airfield in march 1944 photograph bombing targets both before , after xx bomber command missions. in december 1944, unit replaced flight c , 1st photographic reconnaissance squadron (very long range), remained until may 1945.


from 2nd wrs squadron history obtained air force historical research agency @ request of xx bomber command, preparations sending 2nd weather reconnaissance squadron flight china began during latter part of november (1944). decided c flight, capt jean w dixon flight commander undertake initial assignment in forward area. flight consisted of capt dixon , crew, 1st lt joseph shannon , crew, , 1st lt james r malin , crew b-25d aircraft nos. 673, 674 , 675. on 22 november, key ground personnel of c flight arrived @ hsing ching army air base, while squadron aircraft arrived 25 november. c flight operations arranged provide weather recon of north china sectors several days prior first b-29 raid in each of series of missions run xx bomber command chengtu area. recon north continued day prior actual running of b-29 missions. our aircraft provided route weather coverage within 700-statute-mile (1,100 km) radius of action, particular attention given icing conditions, cloud levels, , turbulence , winds, visual check of predetermined redezvous area.


also fourteenth air force 1st combat cargo squadron performed special operation cargo drops airfield during spring (january-mar) 1945 c-47s.


the americans used airfield communications station remainder of war, , turned on airfield chinese government on 29 august 1945.
