the morehouse swim team called tigersharks. 1958 till 1976 swim team had 255 wins , 25 losses, on 15 siac championships, making winning sports team in morehouse history. beat emory university , georgia tech in dual meets in different seasons. team appeared in jet , ebony magazines, black sports, , sports illustrated throughout 1960s , 1970s, , presently being considered honorary inductees international swimming hall of fame in ft. lauderdale, florida. actor samuel l. jackson once team statistician , apprentice swimmer. of swimmers had competed in ncaa , naia competition @ various times throughout team s history. team disestablished in 1976, , funds transferred build morehouse school of medicine, separated morehouse in 1981. during years of 1966 1970, star butterfly swimmer bobby garcia, filmmaker robert g. christie (imbd.com). film, sobbing stone, nominated best feature drama @ sabaoth international film festival in milan, italy in 2006. screenplay of years @ morehouse made major motion picture.


in 2000, morehouse s part-time soccer coach, augustine konneh (who had lobbied soccer elevated varsity status 2 years earlier) signed 2 nigerian-born players play maroon tigers though had played professionally atlanta ruckus of a-league 2 years earlier. played few games morehouse before enrolled @ school. despite obvious red flags in applications—they have been grade-school age when enrolled @ university of liberia, , 1 of them couldn t provide transcript of collegiate coursework—morehouse admitted them. though school s athletic director received word 2 players might have been ineligible, allowed play in 2001 well. although konneh replaced coach in 2001, numerous other violations—including player being allowed compete without proper paperwork—led morehouse cancel 2003 season. in november 2003, ncaa barred morehouse fielding soccer team again until 2006—in effect, extending self-imposed cancellation additional 2 seasons. first multi-year shutdown of athletic program since ncaa adopted repeat violator rules. slapped morehouse 5 years probation—the longest can imposed under ncaa constitution, , tied longest probation ever. usa today called harshest penalty ever handed down collegiate program. division ii infractions committee came down particularly hard on morehouse because of lack of institutional control; time athletic department did not know soccer program existed. while morehouse s first major infractions case, ncaa felt compelled impose ncaa death penalty because of called complete failure keep program in compliance. soccer @ morehouse has since reverted intramural status; school officials had planned shutter varsity soccer indefinite period before ncaa acted.
