several local amateur historians began searching location of accident in 1999. david kemsley , tom zumwalde intrigued name of dirt road, “esmond station road”, off houghton road. found few references esmond train station, later renamed papago train station. “esmond station area plan” revealed prior existence of esmond station , train wreck.
the inventory , plan areas named esmond station, former railroad section station located on rita road one-half mile east of houghton road. head-on collision of 2 passenger trains occurred near site in 1903. portions of original structures still remain, , possibility of designating esmond station historic site being investigated.
they found reference in “railroads of arizona: vol. 1 roads of southern arizona (1975), referred famous head-on collision took place 3 in morning of january 28, 1903, west of esmond, station 15 miles east of tucson. newspaper account blamed train operator , later conductor. douglas maus found large, heavy metal strut embedded in dirt appeared have been torn 1 of train engines. researchers received input richard jones directed them number of photos of wreck @ arizona historical society library.
