in june 1776, parker led naval attack against fortifications on sullivan s island (later called fort moultrie after commander), protecting charleston, south carolina. @ fort, american colonel william moultrie ordered men concentrate fire on 2 large man-of-war ships, hms bristol , hms experiment, took hit after hit fort s guns. chain-shot fired @ hms bristol destroyed of rigging , severely damaged both main- , mizzenmasts. after long , hard-fought battle, parker forced call off attack, having sustained heavy casualties, including loss of sixth-rate hms actaeon, grounded , abandoned. lord william campbell, last british governor of province of south carolina, mortally wounded aboard hms bristol. parker himself wounded flying splinter injured leg , tore off breeches, incident occasioned mirth in newspapers.
parker subsequently served under lord howe in invasion , capture of new york city and, broad pennant in fourth-rate hms chatham, commanded squadron captured long island in august 1776 , rhode island in december 1776.
