early career

grimm, son of paymaster, graduated high school @ aschersleben in 1925 , studied @ university of halle, instructed in prehistory, history, classical archaeology, german studies, geography , geology until 1929. first participated in excavation in 19 27 under hans hahne. 1929 research assistant @ state bureau prehistory. in 1929 awarded doctorate dissertation on die vor- und frühgeschichtliche besiedlung des unterharzes und seines vorlandes auf grund der bodenfunde (the prehistoric , protohistoric settlement of lower harz , foothills on basis of archaeological finds). examiners hahne , georg karo.

grimm member of german youth movement , 1926 völkisch youth league adler und falke (eagle , falcon). before nazi seizure of power member of mannus-society aryan prehistory , prehistoric division of militant league german culture. on 1 february 1933, grimm joined nazi party , registered party member 1,447,316. blockleiter 1933 1934. in 1935, grimm curator , acting director of state bureau volk studies in halle. 1935 editor of journal mitteldeutsche volkheit – hefte für vorgeschichte, rassenkunde und volkskunde (central german volk studies – volumes on prehistory, racial studies , volk studies) along leader of volk studies department, heinz-julius niehoff. after achieved habilitation work on salzmünde culture employed reader , director of state bureau of volk studies in halle 1939 1945.

from november 1942 until december 1944, grimm drafted army second time. after discharged due sickness, grimm employed institute eastern studies in schloss höchstädt, dillingen. there, several colleagues, grimm managed important depot of prehistoric , protohistoric artefacts , volkish objects plundered occupied soviet territories. before arrival of american army, grimm promoted leader of bergungsstätte höchstädt (höchstädt collection point). grimm surrendered collections americans , left höchstädt halle in june 1945, without questioning.

in december 1945, grimm dismissed public service membership in nazi party. on 26 february 1946, paul grimm arrested nkvd , interned in special camp @ torgau. in december 1946 taken there buchenwald, released on 3 february 1950. never sentenced soviet side , later invited archaeological conferences in russia , ukraine on several occasions. in 1951 became member of east berlin academy of sciences , worked in commission prehistory , protohistory. after holding several teaching positions, became professor of humboldt university of berlin in 1955 , 1957 assistant director of institute prehistory , protohistory in academy of sciences. in 1955 made member of german archaeological institute.

from 1956 until 1972 editor in chief of journal ausgrabungen und funde, nachrichtenblatt für vor- und frühgeschichte (excavations , finds, current events in prehistory , protohistory). member of editorial board of natur und heimat (nature , home) 1953 1962 , zeitschrift für archäologie (journal of archaeology) first volume in 1967 until 1973. paul grimm participated extensively in popular scholarship through articles, broschures , tours of excavations through membership in cultural association of ddr, delivered numerous lectures many subjects, excavations @ tilleda.

especially in pioneering excavations of abandoned medieval village of hohenrode , tilleda palace, first entirely excavated kaiserpfalz, grimm responsible great advances in german archaeology. these excavations , theoretical discussions made grimm pioneer of medieval archaeology. stressed archaeological , literary sources had equal authority, nevertheless saw close connection between archaeological , historical data.
