south carolina

in south carolina regular election held simultaneously special election.


the special election resulted resignation of senator strom thurmond on april 4, 1956, keeping campaign pledge had made in 1954 election. thurmond unopposed in bid complete remaining 4 years of term. senator strom thurmond faced no opposition south carolina democrats , avoided primary election. there possibility governor george bell timmerman, jr. might enter race, thurmond held in such high regard voters there have been no chance of defeating thurmond. no challenge remainder of term, thurmond did not conduct campaign , rejoined old law firm in aiken until returned senate after general election.



incumbent democratic senator olin d. johnston handily defeated republican mayor of clemson leon p. crawford. olin d. johnston, incumbent senator, faced no opposition south carolina democrats , avoided primary election. leon p. crawford, mayor of town of clemson in upstate, faced no opposition south carolina republicans , avoided primary election. crawford campaigned defender of states rights , denounced johnston backing new deal , fair deal. state republican party believed crawford have chance in election if galvanized 128,000 registered black voters, although weary of being labeled black party. in end, johnston remained highly popular voters still leery of republican party , defeated crawford in general election.



vermont

in vermont, incumbent republican george aiken ran re-election term in united states senate, defeating democratic incumbent bernard g. o shea.
